QUESTION #2

Howdy!
Hope everyone had a fun Memorial Weekend - I know I did! Since the library was closed on Monday, I am posting this today.

This day in history:
May 25th 1787
(exactly 222 years ago!) The Constitutional Convention formally met in Philadelphia under the leadership of George Washington, in order to establish a new U.S. government.
May 25th 1937 (72 years ago) The first airmail letter to circle the globe - returns to NY
May 25th 1961 (48 years ago) President John F. Kennedy asked the nation to work toward putting a man on the moon by the end of the decade.
Approximately 8 years later Neil Armstrong became the first man who to walk on the moon (July 21st 1969)

I started out this week's post with some historical facts because our question is somewhat related to history and future. Today, 2009 we are an advanced society with great technology - if you look at my history facts just 48 years ago we decided to send a man on the moon - today we have great knowledge of the universe and are even considering Mars to be a possible new planet for humans.

QUESTION #2
What is our city/world going to look like in 40 or 50 years from now? Books? Technology? Crime? Libraries? Schools/Education? Transportation? What do you think?
Be creative!

  1. It could be anything we could keep on advancing at a great speed or just slow down and be similar how it is today or it could be a kida desolate place with the Yellowstone mega volcano over the time limit for erupting. You can't really even imagine what the future will hold.

  2. Lydia,
I can see the desolate place, sounds scary!
I took a class on future policing - "policing in 2020" at the university last semester - it was interesting to see what the professionals think about crime, future and technology. More and more nonlethal weapons will provide an option to deadly weapons, digital documentation of everything officers see, say, and do, and intelligent vehicles to reduce accidents.
Books - did you guys hear about Amazon's Kindle? It is the latest reading device = electronic book - it holds up to 1,500 books!! I personally prefer the good old books but each time I see a person with a Kindle on the plane, I feel that's the solution when it comes to vacation and books. Imagine traveling with 5-6 books.
Do you guys think that libraries will disappear in the future, or library staff will slowly vanish and be replaced by computers/robots? I am sure you guys noticed the self-check out at our library and when you pick up your holds you can now actually pull them from the holds shelf yourself.
When I was a teen, libraries still had the old card catalogs - now we have the fancy online catalogs.
Or what about education? Do you think one day you can finish your degree without even leaving your house? Boise State University is offering more and more online classes. So, who knows...maybe one day you will have Mrs. X-500 your virtual teacher...
